Reuters Article Highlights QVerity's Behavioral Analysis of Executive Commentary for Investors

April 16, 2015 | No Comments

An April 16 article by Reuters focused on QVerity's behavioral analysis of the public commentary of corporate executives to inform investment decisions. Here's an excerpt:

This type of analysis is the latest unorthodox research method used by short-sellers and independent research firms to boost the impact of reports they issue that challenge companies' accounting methods. QVerity, the company hired by Muddy Waters, says it analyses the way people communicate to assess if they are being deceptive. It looked at how Noble's management responded to questions and interacted with analysts on its conference call. "The value that clients, particularly investors, are finding is that through behavioral analysis one can identify potential problems that might not be readily identified through other means," QVerity's CEO Phil Houston, who had a 25-year stint at the CIA, told Reuters.

Columbus Telegram Features Michael Floyd in Article About GET THE TRUTH

April 11, 2015 | No Comments

The Columbus Telegram in Michael Floyd's hometown of Columbus, Nebraska, featured Michael in an April 9 article about our new book, "Get the Truth." Here's an excerpt:

"Spy the Lie" shows how to detect when someone isn't being candid. "Get the Truth" is considered a sequel and tells the reader what comes next, which is the critical interview that gets the person to tell the truth. Interrogating is different than an interview when questions are asked and answers are sought. Interrogating is a monologue, Floyd said, that’s goal is to get the person to think short-term and not consider consequences telling the truth will evoke, like jail time or their spouse leaving. “We provide reasons why telling the truth is good,” he said.

London's Financial Times Reviews GET THE TRUTH

March 30, 2015 | No Comments

"Well, here's a business communications book with a difference." That's how writer Sam Leith opened his review of our new book "Get the Truth" in the March 30 edition of the Financial Times in London. Here's an excerpt:

The secret, they say, is to keep your interlocutor in “short-term thinking mode”, so their mind stays in the room, not on the big picture. If you — talking to them in a calm, low, slow, confident voice — are their only source of outside stimulus you exploit their “inherent vulnerability to influence”. You repeat things over and over: “It’s a psychological truism that the higher the number of instances we hear something, the greater the likelihood we’ll accept it.” You cultivate a “loss of independent thinking”. Above all, you work ever so hard at making sure there is a “lack of immediately identifiable consequences”.

U.K.'s Daily Mail: GET THE TRUTH Is 'Unexpectedly Fascinating'

March 28, 2015 | No Comments

In a March 26 article, Harry Ritchie of the Daily Mail in the U.K.  provided an entertaining look at our new book, "Get the Truth: Former CIA Officers Teach You How to Persuade Anyone to Tell All." Here's an excerpt:

Not only will you learn how to have the guilty singing like canaries, this book also comes up with some genuinely important insights about the interrogation process. Ah, interrogation. Such an unfortunate term, with such regrettable connotations. Torture, screaming agony, electrodes, waterboarding — those kind of connotations. Yes, but it needn't be like that, say the authors, former CIA officers who are painfully aware of what ‘CIA interrogation’ is taken to mean — torture, screaming agony, electrodes, waterboarding — and who are appalled by that reputation.

When young Lisa Irwin went missing from her Kansas City home in October 2011, authorities quickly identified the girl's parents as likely suspects. Phil Houston Speaks with 'Yahoo! Parenting' About Kids and Lying

November 07, 2014 | No Comments

How can you tell when your child is lying? QVerity's Phil Houston recently addressed that topic for an article on the Yahoo! Parenting site.  Here's an excerpt:

Every child at least attempts to lie, says Phil Houston, a former CIA polygraph examiner, co-author of “Spy the Lie: Former CIA Officers Teach You How to Detect Deception,” and a father of three. “Children lie, it’s part of the developmental process,” he says. “Even if they know lying is wrong, they’re still going to try it, as it’s the obvious way to stay out of trouble.” ... By the age of six or seven, children’s deceptions become more sophisticated, and they learn to lie by omission. When asked where she went after school, a child might tell a parent: “I went to A, B, and C.” And leave out D. “To counter this, a parents needs to understand the importance of the follow-up,” Houston says.  “Ask, ‘Where else did you go after school?’”

Phil Houston Featured in 'Psychology Today' Article

July 15, 2014 | No Comments

A July 15 Psychology Today article about detecting deception featured QVerity's Phil Houston, who provided some valuable advice for interviewers on reliable indicators of deception, as well as on popular approaches that may not be so reliable. Here's an excerpt:

"Houston warns that it’s often too difficult to discern valid deviations from baseline. So instead, he encourages interviewers to simply look for clusters of potential tells, whether or not they deviate from baseline. ... Houston believes that verbal as well as nonverbal communication offers hidden clues. For example, note if a person moves from convey mode to convince mode: when normally, s/he gives short, crisp answers but then, to an equally simple question, goes into a long explanation."

Phil Houston Cited in Article About Gap in Nixon White House Tapes

May 27, 2014 | No Comments

The online monthly Washington Decoded earlier this month published an in-depth article about the infamous 18-1/2 minute gap in the Nixon White House tapes in 1972 -- what the article called "one of Watergate's most enduring and tantalizing mysteries." QVerity CEO Phil Houston, who has conducted a behavioral analysis of conversations among the parties involved in the matter, is cited prominently in the article:

And then there is the very powerful “truth in a lie.” Philip Houston, a former CIA employee whose job it was to catch double agents, and recent co-author of the best-seller Spy the Lie, uses a quote from Vice President Spiro T. Agnew to explain the concept.

“I apologize for lying to you,” Agnew once said, “and I promise I won’t deceive you except in matters of this sort [emphasis added].”

As Houston explains it, a liar, without even realizing it, will often “say things that reveal what in reality he knows to be the truth.” Houston calls this phenomenon “unintended messages” or simply “truth in a lie.” In the Agnew example, the disgraced vice president was saying that he would indeed continue to lie “in matters of this sort.”  It was a revealing message buried in an otherwise truthful apology.
